Paul Langlois’ 2nd solo album, “Not Guilty”, will be released by Langlois’ own independent record label, Ching Music, on November 5th 2013.

The album was recorded and mixed by Bathouse engineers Aaron Holmberg and Nyles Spencer, and produced by Langlois.

It was recorded in early June of ’13, over a six-day period at The Hip’s Bathouse Studio in Bath, Ontario.

It was a far different experience for The Tragically Hip guitarist to record than was
his first solo effort, “Fix This Head”.

Why was the experience so different?

“Well, for one thing, I recorded this one with a band instead of all by myself. It was a lot more fun to make because of that – better playing, more energy, more laughs doing it, lots of creative help and ideas from all of them.”

And who’s in the band?

Toronto, ON – Kingston based singer/songwriter Greg Ball will release his sophomore album, Mr. Rightplace (Ching Music/Fontana North) on June 18, 2013. Recorded at The Bathhouse in Bath, Ontario, the album features 11 new tracks written by Ball and produced by Ching Music founder, Paul Langlois. Drawing from experiences of love and loss, Mr. Rightplace is a product of Ball’s growing confidence as a songwriter and showcases the tight-knit relationship with his band that includes multi-instrumentalist, Joe Carscallen, drummer Rob Radford and bassist Paul Müller.

“This is a band record,” says Ball. “Four guys with different ideas for 11 songs that all seemed to work. A completely different process from my first record and the way I want to continue recording music.”

‚ÄúGreg’s voice literally turned my head the first time I heard it,‚Äù says Langlois, who signed Ball to Ching Music in 2011 and has been integral to launching his career. ‚ÄúI consider Mr. Rightplace to be based around that special voice, and his uniquely emotional songwriting.”

Mr. Rightplace is a lean, alt rock album with a hint of country/folk. Lyrically, it circles around life’s triumphs and misunderstandings, resulting in a set of songs that are raw, real and honest; displaying Ball’s talents as a vocalist, songwriter and storyteller.

This summer, Ball will perform select dates in support of Mr. Rightplace, followed by a full Canadian tour this fall.

This record is a surprise to me.

I didn’t think I was making an album until it was almost finished.

In Feb 2010, I booked our studio (The Bathouse), and our engineer, Aaron Holmberg, for a few days, with the intention of experimenting a little.

I started with a couple of songs, Shattered Down and If I Were You, that I’d been tinkering with in my basement. For those 2 tunes, I’d already recorded the guitar and bass at home over a drum machine, and I wanted to see if I could play real drums over all of it, ideally replacing the electronic drums.

My Friend Andy teamed up with Paul Langlois in ’07/08 to create their debut record “Songs From The Middle” at The Bathouse Studio in historic Bath, Ontario. The MFA recording rookies brought in the songs and Paul, as any great producer would be, was super supportive of the effort. He judiciously massaged the arrangements, and challenged MFA to dig deep for new creative expression – all the while ensuring with a smile that “…it’ll be good…”. And it was. The experience in the studio, the laughs along the way (Mr. Show, especially – thanks to Aaron), and the end product are all things that we’ll keep with us forever. So thanks Paul, for believing in us and the tunes…
